This 70 minute documentary looks at our shadow or dark side and opens with three questions.

• What are you hiding?
• When will you face the truth?
• What will be possible when you do?

The DVD is set up as if we are at a workshop with Debbie Ford, best selling author of books on the shadow and is intercut with comment from stellar teachers such as Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. It also moves in and out of black and white flashback and story to highlight the points being talked about. 

Crystallizing moment

Debbie Ford, opens by admitting her dark side. That she has been in drug rehab several times and she tells about her crystallizing moment when she faced her worst fear, that of facing her addiction and how that led to her biggest breakthrough.

Behind the mask  

Throughout the DVD we learn about the shadow and how it operates in our lives. The things we lie about, avoid, our dark and intrinsic side we try to hide. How instead of dealing with it, we repress it. We pretend it’s not happening and deny it. But it comes out in other ways. And at the same time how we try so hard to pretend and cover what we find unnaceptable about ourselves. How we create a public and a private life. And how these masks then become our prisons. It also talks about the collective shadow and how this manifests as evil, war, terrorism and social injustice.

The DVD is filled with great information on this totally fascinating subject. It’s slick and smartly filmed. It’s interactive, as if you were at a workshop and gives you great examples of how the shadow works, through people in the public eye and celebrity. The DVD challenges you to look at yourself and is simultaneously informative and entertaining. It is, at times, also emotional and moving when people share their own personal stories. The final point that is made is that ignoring your shadow is dangerous and that when you do know and acknowledge the gifts of the shadow then you can be free. A powerful and useful tool for therapists, teachers, parents and anyone who want to really know themselves fully.
