Part 2. July-December 2010

The best year of your life.

Every New Year represents a new beginning, an opportunity to create an exciting, rewarding life. Best-selling author and life coach, Debbie Ford believes that “everything you want, whether it’s happiness, success, money, romance or joy … begins with making the commitment to love yourself first. Then the entire world will open up for you.” So follow Debbie’s advice and get set for the year of your life!

Print out our 12 month guide, last week was January to June. This week, July to December and put it on your fridge or send it to a friend and work on it together!

JULY – LOVE YOUR IMPERFECTIONS

Remember, no one is perfect. Your assignment this month is to learn to love yourself as you are.

Things to do in July …

  1. Make a list of things you dislike about yourself, and then find the positive side to these negatives.
  2. Choose something you haven’t forgiven yourself for, and finally let yourself off the hook.
  3. Ask someone you trust to list the qualities they admire about you.
  4. Choose one habit that annoys you about yourself and work on really changing it.

Reward: Eat something you love … guilt free

AUGUST – SING YOUR PRAISES

Although it might sound crazy, we generally find it much easier to put ourselves down than say what we’ve done is fantastic. The challenge is to risk being considered a tall poppy and give yourself a pat on the back!

Things to do in August …

  1. Write down everything you’ve achieved in our life that you’re proud of.
  2. Make a list of your talents and things you do well.
  3. Take aside two people you wouldn’t normally confide in, and tell them what makes you proud about yourself.

Reward: Spend an evening dreaming big. What would you do if there was nothing to stop you?

SEPTEMBER – TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE

September means spring and new life – and change is in the air. If you are looking for direction, this is the time of the year to do it. They don’t call it a “spring clean” just because it sounds good!

Things to do in September…

  1. Note down what you’ve been saying to friends and family and take the good advice you give to others.
  2. Think of someone you’d like to give advice to. What would you like to say? See if this advice applies to you!
  3. Write a letter to yourself. Compose it like this: “Dear (your name), This is how I see your situation … If I were you I would … Love (your name).”
  4. Bite the bullet and take the action you’ve suggested.

Reward: Book yourself a short break.

OCTOBER – PLEASE YOURSELF

Are you so busy looking after everyone else at work or home that you can’t nurture your own dreams? You need some quality “me time”. Take the focus off others and look for ways to please yourself.

Things to do in October …

  1. Practise saying no without making excuses. Cancel everything you do because you feel and obligation to do it. Replace these things with things you want to do.
  2. Prioritise. If it’s not an urgent issue, it can wait.
  3. Make requests for things you would like or need.
  4. Set clear boundaries. If someone or something is taking up too much of your time, reclaim your space and your power.

Reward: Spend an afternoon doing something you’ve been putting off but really want to do.

NOVEMBER– LEARN SOMETHING NEW

You’ve done so much good work already. This is the month to stretch your horizons even further.

Things to do in November …

  1. Join a club or take up the hobby you’ve been wanting to for ages.
  2. Go to a different place to shop, holiday or relax.
  3. Talk to someone who you wouldn’t normally spend time with.
  4. Sign up for a course that can help you achieve your career dreams … even if you feel nervous about it.

Reward: Indulge your inner artist – whether it’s in the kitchen, at an easel, in a journal, doing some craft or whatever lights your creative candle.

DECEMBER – HAVE SOME FUN

Summer and holidays are here, and now you’re ready to enjoy them as never before! It’s easy to putt off doing things we love, but having fun is very important. So, kick back and chill out.

Things to do in December …

  1. Do one thing that you love but haven’t had time to do for a long time.
  2. Write down some of the things you enjoyed back in your childhood but gave up. Do they still appeal? If so, why not try them again?
  3. Schedule in something entirely enjoyable that has no useful purpose.
  4. Organise a play date with a few of your friends and let yourself be silly!
  5. Choose one habit that annoys you about yourself and work on really changing it.

Reward: Take a day off and fill it with only fun things to do.
